Nestled beside the historic archaeological site at Legion Park in Miami, Mérida Magic is a residence inspired by the architecture, craftsmanship, and quiet beauty of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. Designed as a contemporary retreat, the home draws upon natural materials, artisanal traditions, and a deep respect for place, creating an atmosphere that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

The Brief
The homeowners envisioned a sanctuary that would evoke the feeling of escaping to the Yucatán every time they walked through the front door. Rather than recreating a resort aesthetic, they wanted a home that celebrated authenticity—one where architecture, craftsmanship, and natural materials worked together to create a sense of calm, permanence, and connection. Their aspiration was not to imitate Tulum, but to capture its spirit in a way that felt genuine and enduring.
The Challenge
The greatest challenge was creating authenticity without relying on interpretation or trend. It would have been easy to reproduce the visual language commonly associated with Tulum, but that approach would never have achieved the emotional connection the clients were seeking. Every space needed to feel as though it naturally belonged there, as if the home had evolved over time rather than being assembled from imported references.
The Journey
To fully understand the culture and craftsmanship that inspired the project, we traveled to Mérida, where we immersed ourselves in the region's architecture, artisan workshops, and local markets. We collaborated directly with skilled craftspeople, carefully selecting handcrafted textiles, pottery, antique tortilla tables, decorative objects, and one-of-a-kind pieces that carry the history and character of the Yucatán. This journey became an essential part of the design process, allowing every object introduced into the home to have an authentic story and connection to its origins.
The Design Approach
Materiality became the foundation of the residence. Traditional chukum plaster introduces warmth and texture while reflecting centuries of regional craftsmanship. Crema Maya stone grounds the architecture with quiet elegance, complemented by reclaimed woods, natural fibers, and handcrafted finishes that age gracefully over time. Rather than competing for attention, each material was selected to create harmony, allowing natural light and subtle variations in texture to define the experience of the home.
Throughout the interiors, every detail was considered with restraint. The objective was never to create dramatic moments, but to establish an atmosphere that feels collected, effortless, and deeply rooted in its inspiration.
The Result
Today, Mérida Magic feels less like a newly completed residence and more like a home with an established history. Rich in texture, handcrafted details, and natural materials, it offers an immersive experience that celebrates craftsmanship over trends and authenticity over imitation. The home reflects not only the beauty of the Yucatán but also the belief that meaningful interiors are created through understanding the places, people, and traditions that inspire them.
The project was later featured in Florida Design, recognized for its thoughtful interpretation of regional architecture and its celebration of artisanal craftsmanship, natural materials, and timeless design.
